I think its contributed to the obsession I had at a young age of wanting to capture moments in time. Since once a moment in time is gone, it's gone forever. I wanted to preserve a small time. A part of history for myself.
While this still holds true today, I got burnt out. I would capture my moments in time, but wouldn't do anything with them. Slowly the images began to pile up, and before I knew it, I had five hard drives full of images I haven't touched since saving them to the drives. I guess you can say I'm more in love with capturing the images than finishing them. I never was a big fan of editing my photos. Something about sacrificing the integrity of the image for an "aesthetic" never really appealed to me. But I never was satisfied with my images. I always felt like they were missing something. A "pop" or a sense of "zest" and so I kept putting them away. And eventually, I put my camera away too.
It's easy to get discouraged, especially when there are so many talented people there, are presets, actions filters available to turn any image from "ow" to "wow". But if you're always comparing yourself to others, you'll never truly grow. The only person you should try to be better than was who you were yesterday.
I want to keep it simple. One of my favorite designers believed that the way to command attention and win approval was not by being sensational or shrill, or obvious, but by being distinguished, subtle, and original. I don't know if I'm there yet, I know it will take sometime to fully craft my craft. I don't think I'll ever perfect it. But that's okay, it means I'll always be growing right?
I'm not saying this is my comeback story, I'm justing exploring and falling back in love with something that I lost. My life has been pretty crazy these last four months, and I haven't been shooting as much as I would like. But when inspiration hits, you'll take anything you can get your hands on. I've been experimenting and trying to find my own "editing" style. I'd say my preference is a hybrid between a clean edit and lots of colors and slight over exposure.
